NH House Leadership Responds to Florida Court Ruling on Obamacare

In response to today’s ruling by a federal judge in Florida that struck down as unconstitutional key parts of the sweeping health care reform bill championed by President Barack Obama. New Hampshire House Speaker William O’Brien and Majority Leader DJ Bettencourt offered the following statements:

Speaker William O’Brien:

"Today's federal court ruling finding Obamacare unconstitutional is a victory for New Hampshire taxpayers, who would have been subject to huge new state spending to pay for this law, as well as our citizens, who would have been forced to buy health insurance or pay major penalties.  It's truly unfortunate that our Attorney General has not joined 28 of his colleagues to stand up for New Hampshire rights against an overreaching federal government.  Thankfully, many states have taken up this fight and we will continue our efforts to ensure that New Hampshire becomes the 29th state to join the effort to protect our freedoms.”

House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt:

“Once again the courts have agreed with us that “Obamacare” is unconstitutional.  Almost from the moment that this legislation became law, Republicans in the New Hampshire House have spoken out against it.  We called upon our attorney general to join with other states in filing a lawsuit challenging “Obamacare” but Governor Lynch and the Democratic leadership at the time refused to join with us in standing up for the citizens of our state.    Today’s federal court decision comes just two days before the New Hampshire House is to take up HB 89, which will, in fact, require our attorney general to file a lawsuit challenging the act.  I call upon my colleagues in the legislature to support HB 89 when it comes to the floor of the House on Wednesday so that we may join the fight against expensive mandates. “Obamacare” not only comes with a huge price tag for the State of New Hampshire, but also with a loss of freedom and quality of healthcare to its citizens.”
