CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien (R-Mont Vernon) and House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencort (R-Salem) congratulated the State Senate for passage of CACR 5, a constitutional amendment to add a line item veto to reduce state spending. The bill passed the Senate by a 19-5 party line vote.
House Speaker William O’Brien
“A line item veto is a common sense way of reining in state spending, reducing growth in government and protecting taxpayers. I congratulate the Senate for their commitment to limited government in joining the 43 other states nationally in giving rescission authority to the Governor and passing this bill. We look forward to passing this amendment and giving the voters this tool to keep government in check.”
House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt
“The Senate has taken an important step toward being able to control future spending in New Hampshire state government. A line-item veto is a very effective tool to be used against unnecessary spending because it allows a governor to veto items on budget lines rather than holding up an entire budget. House Republican leadership fully intends to support this meaningful legislation and we look forward to its arrival on the floor. It passed the Senate today, 19-5, in a strictly partisan vote, with every Republican member supporting the measure. I am confident that this constitutional amendment will receive the same kind of support in the House.”
