NH House leadership statement on HB 536; Gun Rights

CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien and House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt today released the following statement on House Bill 536, a constitutional carry bill, which passed the House,  193 to 122. The bill asserts the natural right to carry a firearm, openly or concealed, without a license.

 House Speaker William O’Brien

“The state of Vermont does not require a concealed carry permit and joins New Hampshire in being the safest state in the nation. Both our federal and state constitutions assert our rights to keep and bear arms. This alone should serve as a license to carry a firearm. The added safety of ourselves and our neighbors further recommends this legislation.”

 House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt

"Republicans strongly believe that the Second Amendment is a Constitutional guarantee on the rights of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.  New Hampshire has a low crime rate and we believe that it is because we have some of the least onerous gun regulations in the country.  As part of our Republican agenda, we promised to address some fundamental concerns about our rights and we are constantly working to correct these problems.  HB 536 addresses a natural right to carry a firearm and the law has worked for our neighboring State of Vermont for decades."
