NH House Majority Leader Comments on Voting Down Truth in Sentencing Bill

CONCORD – House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt offered the following statement on the failure of House Bill 1654, relative to earned time credits for inmates participating in rehabilitative programming. The bill was killed on a voice vote.

House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt

“Although this bill has very good intentions, it violates New Hampshire’s long standing tradition of truth in sentencing. No one should be able to leave prison early simply because they have more financial means or because they were placed in a facility that offered educational credits. Those who choose to commit crimes should do so with the understanding that that they will be sentenced to the full extent of their crimes, and that there will be no ‘fast track’ out.”
