Vermont Senate Votes to Close Nuclear Plant in 2012

By a vote of 26 to 4, the Vermont State Senate decided on Wednesday not to consider extending the operating license of the state's only nuclear power plant, the aging Vermont Yankee facility, which will expire in March 2012. Backers of the license extension had argued that the state needs both the power and the jobs the plant supplies, but critics said the plant has been trouble-prone and cited conflicts with its owner, the Entergy Corporation of New Orleans.
