Bettencourt statement on HB 589 (Card Check)

The following statement was issued by House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt following the passage of HB 589 (card check repeal) today by the House Labor Committee.  The bill repeals written majority authorization for an employee organization to be certified as the exclusive representative of public employees in a bargaining unit.

“I applaud the Labor committee for positively moving this important legislation out of committee. Card check would allow unions to do away with secret ballots, a fundamental right in a democracy, and unionize companies simply by coaxing, cajoling or coercing a majority of workers into signing a card. By forcing workers to sign a card in public - instead of vote in private - card check opens the door to intimidation and coercion.”
