NH Unemployment Rate Continues to Drop

Concord--With the national unemployment rate hovering near double digits, New Hampshire received good news today with the announcement that the preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2011 was 4.8 percent, a decrease of 1.3 percent over May 2010.  Additionally the number of unemployed residents for May 2011 is more than 10,000 fewer than in May 2010. 

 

"We must remain cautiously optimistic with regard to employment numbers, but it is encouraging to see more and more New Hampshire residents going back to work.  We are optimistic that our pro-business, pro-jobs agenda that we have pursued this legislative session will resulted in more jobs for the men and women of New Hampshire," said House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt (r-Salem).

 

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2011 was 9.1 percent, the highest rate of the year.

 

"The fact that New Hampshire continues to rank among the lowest in the country in terms of unemployment numbers is further evidence that our conservative approach to spending and taxes is working.  The New Hampshire Advantage is real and is tangible and we must continue to protect and preserve it.  Less government, lower taxes and less spending results in greater job growth," said Bettencourt.
