NH House Leaders Comment on Blocking Restriction of Use of Gasoline and Heating Oil, Raise Fuel Prices

CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien (R-Mont Vernon) and House Majority Leader Pete Silva (R-Nashua) today commented on the passage of committee of conference report on House Bill 1487, which would prohibit New Hampshire from participating in any low carbon fuel standards program requiring quotas, caps, or mandates on fuels used for transportation, industrial purposes, or home heating without authorization from the legislature. The scheme to cap the amount of gasoline and other liquid fuels, such as home heating oil, would raise the price of these fuels.  According to an analysis by the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) of the economic impact of the regional low carbon fuel standards on Northeast states, nominal gasoline prices would at least double and diesel and jet fuel prices would increase by at least 18-23% under the program. HB 1487 passed on a voice vote.

House Speaker William O’Brien

“In 2009, Governor Lynch began the process of raising the price of gas and heating fuel by implementing this absurd scheme known as low carbon fuel standards.  Now is certainly not the time to be raising the price at the gas pump. We should be looking for ways to increase production of gas and heating oil, not trying to find ways to restrict it.”

House Majority Leader Pete Silva

“It’s time to stop adding to the burden on the backs of our working families and to start helping our citizens.  The Governor and his Democratic colleagues continue forward on this reckless proposal to increase fuel costs on our citizens.  The last thing we need is a ‘liquid RGGI’ for New Hampshire.”

NH House Leaders Comment on Passage of Bill to Block Restriction of Use of Gasoline and Heating Oil, Raise Fuel Prices

CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien (R-Mont Vernon) and House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt (R-Salem) today commented on the passage of House Bill 1487, a bill to require that the state must get legislative approval before moving forward on implementing low carbon fuel standards, a scheme to cap the amount of gasoline and other liquid fuels, such as home heating oil, which would raise the price of these fuels.  The bill passed by a vote of 243 to 96.

House Speaker William O’Brien

“In 2009, the Governor Lynch signed an agreement to begin the process of raising the price of gas and heating fuel by implementing this absurd scheme known as low carbon fuel standards.  Right now, the Lynch administration is looking to implement this plan that will increase the bite for working families to fill up their gas tanks and to pay for heating oil.  This bill puts the brakes on this assault on our wallets, at a time when we should be working to reduce the cost of gas, not raising it.  Our nation should be looking for ways to increase production of gas and heating oil, not trying to find ways to restrict it.”

House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt

“If the Governor and his Democratic colleagues paid attention to what has happened at the gas pumps over the past few weeks, they would have already stopped this absurd plan to raise the cost to fill up your tank.  Instead, the Lynch Administration is continuing forward on this reckless proposal to increase our costs on everyone to put gas in our cars and heating oil in our houses.  It’s time to stop adding to the burden on the backs of our working families and to start helping our citizens.  The last thing we need is a ‘liquid RGGI’ for New Hampshire.”

NH House Leaders Respond to Senate Vote Against Repealing Cap and Trade Program

CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien (R-Mont Vernon) and House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt (R-Salem) offered the following statements after the State Senate failed to override Governor Lynch’s veto (15-9) on Senate Bill 154, which would remove New Hampshire from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a cap and trade program that encompasses 10 Northeast states.

 House Speaker William O’Brien

“We’re obviously disappointed that New Hampshire ratepayers will continue to be stuck with higher electricity costs as a result of keeping this failed cap and trade program around.  At a time when we should be doing everything possible to make New Hampshire more competitive in order to create more good jobs here, getting out of this cap and trade scheme that increases costs on employers and our citizens should be a slam dunk.  We will be back next year to get rid of this job-killing income redistribution ploy once and for all.”

 House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt

“The evidence is mounting that RGGI is now a colossal failure for reducing carbon emissions and has been only a success in one area – creating a slush fund for green pork.  As someone who voted for the initial bill to create this program, I can now say that it was a huge mistake for New Hampshire to join this cap-and-tax scheme.  It’s a shame that Governor Lynch was more interested in protecting special interests than offering rate relief to our hard-working citizens, but House Republicans will make defeating cap-and-tax a top priority next session.”
