Drill? Let Our Children Decide

When I got my drivers license in 1966 the national debt was low and gas was 25 cents a gallon.

Today every newborn American Child assumes $30,000 of our national debt. That number continues to grow. Nearly every cent of this money is attributable to the Republican supply--siders from Reagan to Bush. We owe more to China alone than my generation can possibly pay. And don’t forget that the trillions of dollars that Iraq will cost us aren’t even on the books. Our debt grows every day and we are leaving the whole mess to our children.

Now the crooks that sold us out are  trying to grab everything they can while Bush is still in office. It doesn’t occur to them to leave what’s left of our natural resources to our children and grandchildren. It doesn’t occur to them that our children will face monumental environmental issues. Nope, George Bush, the oil man and President, ( in that order) is selling the idea that America’s pain at the gas pumps can be solved by drilling immediately.

Does anybody still trust this guy and his parrots from D.C. to New Hampshire. The whole bunch including the Union Leader, Fergus Cullen and a slew of Republican candidates are braying in lock step on this one.

Enough!

Here’s a novel idea: Let’s let the next generation of American decide what to do with our untapped oil reserves.

Under Republican policies we’ve squandered eight precious years. For eight years Republicans favored big oil over working Americans. For eight years Republicans ignored the environment. For eight years Republicans ignored green business opportunities and alternative energy development. For eight years Republicans gave mileage breaks to SUV’s and ignored the need for efficient automobiles. That was great for Detroit, but as usual when crunch time comes, its the Japanese and Europeans who are ready.

So why. why, why, can’t Republicans at least leave something for future Americans?

Why can’t Republicans see where this self defeating greed is leading us?

I expect my markets-are-always-right friends to claim that I don’t understand the realities of business cycles and investment in exploration and technology blah blah blah.

Baloney to that!

It’s time for big oil and the party of big oil to adjust to the realities of American life not the other way around. Let the companies keep their profits. They’ve stuffed their pockets. Good for them, may they enjoy it.

But, would it be too much to expect our oil industry and the Republican Party to think about America’s future instead of exploiting American’s pain at the pumps?

Nah! Not this crowd.

They don’t have it in them.

Chaz, based on this comment:
"Today every newborn American Child assumes $30,000 of our national debt."

You must be livid about state democrats choosing to bond away the debt here in NH, yes?

Richad

There is a difference between five dollars in short term debt and thirty thousand dollars that grows every day.

Under Gov Lynch the NH budget is tightening to meet the economic downturn. Not to mention that the largest budgetary problem is paying for education which is our way of investing in our children ( as opposed to big oil)

Why do I even bother to point these things out to you???

My point stands--do unto others.

Good point, Richard. If Benson and the GOP had tried to pull that she would be all over them. But it's ok because the Democrats can do no wrong.

I agree that we shouldn't drill however placing the whole blame on the national GOP is wrong. There are some Democrats who would vote for drilling. Just like some Democrats voted to invade Iraq. And now they say that they are against the war but they keep voting to fund it.
The problem is ALL the congressmen (with the exception of the few who have read the Constitution) in Washington DC not the party.

Also you may want to check your figures....The oil companies make about 10% profit margin. Software companies make about 20-50% profit margin. Should we have a windfall profit on them?

Chaz, do you even believe all the rhetoric you post on this site? Most of it is so ridiculous I would like to believe you know better but you are just parroting the talking points. Since 1966 who has controlled Congress most of those years? Were there no Democrats in the White House since 1966? Where did the national debt come from? Where do our unfunded liabilities come from? They come primarily from entitlement programs started, supported, and pushed relentlessly by DEMOCRATS! Socialist Democrats in Washington and in every state in the union (most recently, in this one as well) have spent, spent, spent us into this mess. Yes, Republicans at times have added to the problem but they have never been the main movers of all this government bloat. That is the speciality of socialist Democrats. It has nothing to do with BIG OIL. I could ask the same questions I did in the response to your other post but you will probably ignore them here as you did there. You have no answers - only spin and talking points. You make no sense and you dismiss quaint ideas like free markets. You clearly favor big government centrally controlled solutions to "solve" problems through force. You are essentially a Stalinist.

And for that reason Jackie Barnes will clean your clock in November. New Hampshire may be weakening but most people aren't ready to submit completely to fascist rule yet.

Fascist?

What's your name and how can I get hold of you?

We can carry on a factual and serious conversation any time/

But you must come of of the shadows first.

If you don't care to here, then call me on my cell phone. 231-7562

I'm assuming that you are too much of a coward to tell me your name or call me.

But if you surprise me I promise I'll meet you half way.

Citizen,

I agree all the blame doesn't rest with the GOP. But look, George Bush is an Oil Man and has championed that industry for eight years.

Contrast him with the Democrats nominee in 2000 Al Gore.

Pretty clear difference in outlook I think you'll agree.

Also look at Dick Cheney and Halliburton. That company has done a disasterous job in Iraq with missing money and all sorts of chenanigans and overcharges.

Can you in your wildest dreams see men like that heading up the Democratic party?

Chaz, why do you want Concerned Taxpayer's name? Your tone smacks of intimidation. I thought the purpose of websites like this was to allow folks to debate issues. His or her name isn't important. Why don't you debate what he or she has to say here on your blog where we can all read it and join in if we're so inclined?

Concerned Taxpayer has called me a Stalinist and a fascist in so many words.

He doesn't deserve any of my time at all.

I've found over the years that the people who engange in the most extreme name calling are all cowards at heart.

He could call me from a pay phone and remain anonymous, but he doesn't even have the guts to do that.

Chaz, I think you're a tad too sensitive to run a blog.

I have been blogging for three years at this site alone.

If you are new, welcome.

I am one of the few blogger here who has never, evey censored a comment. I have never writen with comments off.

Last year there was a huge debate here about anonymous bloggers and I defended the practice.

I've got hundreds of posts here, but for a summary of some of my experiences I would ask you to read my May 28th column about three years of blogging here.

Then you can decide whether or not I've earned my stripes here.

I hope you stick around and don't judge anything too quickly.

I would also point out that I spent the majority of last week with two very prominent Libertarain friends.

Again, welcome and I hope you continue to participate

Chaz blaming 'the oil man' is a straw man.
The exact same policies were in place under Clinton.
I didn't vote for Bush and think he is the worst President we have ever had but I certainly don't blame the GOP for the 'oil issues'.
June 27, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCitizen of NH
Citizen of NH.

Under Bush policies haven't changed is correct. One might have hoped that policies over the last eight years would reflect the times we live in. There is less oil and far more demand.

The Chinese alone have changed the entire equation with their red hot economy and demand for fuel.

We've lost eight vital years that we'll never get back.
