I Don’t Understand All The Legalese

The text of Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement letter to President Bush.

"Dear President Bush:

This is to inform you of my decision to retire from my position as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States effective upon the nomination and confirmation of my successor. It has been a great privilege, indeed, to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms. I will leave it with enormous respect for the integrity of the court and its role under our constitutional structure.

Sandra Day O'Connor"

Why so cryptic Sandra? I mean we all know that under new interpretations, our former Second Amendment rights are now "collective" rights. So are you retiring for everyone? Is the whole US Supreme Court stepping down? This is so confusing.

Or could this message be like the recent Ten Commandments ruling where it means one thing inside the courtroom and another outside in a park. If that is the case we would need to know exactly where Sandra gave this note to Bush.

Oddly, Sandra mentions "Supreme Court of the United States". After all the cases decided lately using law from Europe why bring Uncle Sam into this?

"…enormous respect for the integrity of the court and its role under our constitutional structure". Clever move not mentioning the Constitution itself but rather its STRUCTURE. This girl is sharp!!

And the word "retire" could mean anything. Such wiggle room. As an example, the word "cherish" means "pay for with an income tax" in NH. "Retire" - what a bizarre choice of a word.

Jurists these days truly are gifted wordsmiths. I guess I am doomed to sit here until I figure this thing out. It would have been nice of Sandy to pen something understandable.

Here is a suggestion:

Dear America:

All I wanted was to be liked by the right people. I am ashamed for what I have done to your country. Four of the remaining goons are wearing red hammer and sickle underwear. The photos are in a bus station locker. The key is under Sam Donaldson’s toupee. I beg your forgiveness. I am moving to Canukistan.
