Here, from their web site, is their lofty mission statement:
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington targets government officials who sacrifice the common good to special interests. We will help Americans use litigation to shine a light on those who betray the public trust:
*If a public official misuses his position to demand campaign contributions, CREW will find creative ways to seek civil remedies.
*If a witness is threatened or punished because she reported official misconduct, CREW will fight back on behalf of the witness — including representing that individual in court if necessary.
*If a government agency withholds information to which the public is entitled, CREW will go to court to enforce legal rules regarding disclosure.
*If a group libels an honest public servant, CREW will help the victim defend his reputation.
CREW backs up their pledge to uncover corrupt congressmen by posting their Top Twenty List. This is the 2006 list:
Members of the House:
Roy Blunt (R-MO)
Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO)
Ken Calvert (R-CA)
Richard Pombo (R-CA)
John Doolittle (R-CA)
Rick Renzi (R-AZ)
Tom Feeney (R-FL)
Pete Sessions (R-TX)
Katherine Harris (R-FL)
John Sweeney (R-NY)
Charles Taylor (R-NC)
Jerry Lewis (R-CA)
Gary Miller (R-CA)
Curt Weldon (R-PA)
Maxine Waters (D-CA)
Alan Mollohan (D-WV)
William Jefferson (D-LA)
(Notice how Alcee Hastings and Jack Murtha are missing from the top twenty?)
Members of the Senate:
Conrad Burns (R-MT)
Bill Frist (R-TN)
Rick Santorum (R-PA)
Notice all the Republicans on the list? That is because CREW is so nonpartisan.
The severely honest and nonpartisan Ms. Melanie Sloan is the Executive Director of CREW. And that would make her convicted criminal George Soros's employee or at least partner in this venture.
But who is this progressive fraud-fighter Melanie Sloan who comes riding to our rescue?
In 1993, Ms. Sloan was Nominations Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee's Senator Joe Biden (D-DE).
In 1994, Ms. Sloan was counsel for a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by then-Representative Charles Schumer (D-NY).
Prior to starting CREW for George Soros, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia where, from 1998-2003. (I quess you can't work for a convicted criminal AND be a US Attorney – yet.)
So far, we see that Melanie Sloan worked for several left wing congressmen. But the most important one in her past now has to be Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) who will head up The House Judiciary Committee.
What strikes me is how Melanie seems to have “forgotten” to mention either Chuck Schumer or Congressman John Conyers on her list of ethical problems.
Schumer's former top aids plead guilty to breaking into Maryland Senate Candidate, Mike Steele's credit card records during this past election in an effort to dirty him up. What gives? “Senator connected to TWO convicted aides caught trying to discredit black Republican candidate” isn't a juicy headline? Guess not with this crew.
Then we have her favorite former boss, Rep. John Conyers.
Absentee father Conyers has been reported numerous time by former congressional staffers for having his taxpayer-funded Congressional office staff babysit for him while he was “away” and his wife was attending law school. That would be a violation of:
18 U.S.C § 606 (prohibiting adverse personnel action or intimidation to secure a "contribution of money or other valuable thing" including services, for a political purpose).
For the full story see The Hill:
Sydney Rooks, a legal adviser in his Detroit wound up a babysitter while the Congressman was away, often until late at night.
This quote from a CNN story:
Deanna Maher, who was deputy chief of staff in Conyers' Downriver office, says her baby-sitting duties turned into a stint as a full-time nanny. "He handed me the keys to his car and his house, [said] take care of my child Carl and everything," Maher told CNN from her western Michigan home.
It has been reported that some of the Conyers Congressional staff worked on his wife's failed State Senate campaign as well as local election in Michigan.
Maher and Rooks both complained to the House Ethics committee about this and an investigation was started in 2004 then dropped – suddenly.
Now here is some corruption Melanie Sloan has some connection with. I found this quote from a CNNH story:
CNN Quote: Melanie Sloan, who once worked for the congressman herself, says she is not surprised about the allegations or about the apparent lack of response from the House ethics committee.
You bet she is not surprised! Exposing progressive crooks isn't her game plan. She works for one!
But there is a potential savior in this story!
Our new Congresswoman, NH”s own, Carol Shea-Porter-Swett has a stated mission of rooting out corruption in Washington in the two years she will be there.
Carol will not stand for any of this corruption. (Except maybe her pal and donor Jack Murtha and William Jefferson who is "temporarily" off the Ways and Means committee.)
She is their toughest opponent and they know it!!!
