Or Does He Plan To Lose?

"Cowardice asks the question: 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question: 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question: 'Is it popular?' But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is right." Martin Luther King, Jr.

Consider this:

Barack Obama gets a request from his general that a war in which we are currently sending Americans to die requires an additional 40,000 troops within a year or the war will be lost. The request comes in September of 2009.

Here it is almost half way through November 2009 and Barack Obama and his military/political advisors are still mulling over options. One might call this dithering.

There is in Afghanistan a thing known as WINTER, which is now HERE.

So President Barack Obama’s decision has already been made for him – as though he has simply voted “present”.

You are not, if you are sane, going to send 40,000 troops through several feet of snow into blocked passes and flooded rivers and achieve anything of value other than teach soldiers how to wait until spring and get picked off one at a time.

Barack Obama is out of his league and our troops are in danger under his failure of command.

There comes a time when no decision is as bad as the possibility of a wrong one.

Ed you are so correct. This delay shows just how big of mistake was made last year.

Obama needs to either win this war, whatever it takes, or bring the boys home!

It is a matter of money and his priorities. As long as he votes 'present' the cost of the troops is not really on the books and his Health Care Debacle costs, Scrap and Trade costs, and Stimulus II cost aren't challenged (... right!).

As we saw in Ft Hood, The One will always vote 'present' to protect those of his faith rather than act like an American patriot.

Armies that allowed to retreat are armies that are defeated.

This has been demonstrated throughout history.

Too much invested now.

In the meantime I do not understand why napalm and arc-lite isn't applicable in this whole situation.

This is a war.

Steve Connoly: "Kill 'em all and let God sort out the innocent from the guilty."

Can any of you armchair generals explain what a victory looks like in Afghanistan when the Afghans religion says they have a duty to expell infidels? How is our 8 year occupation of this country different from Russia's occupation?

"Steve Connoly: "Kill 'em all and let God sort out the innocent from the guilty."

This is a fair. In war there are no innocents. There is nothing between the complete annihilation of the enemy and the victory of the stongest military force.

This is a war.

Generals are not policy makers. Generals follow orders. If I were a policy maker than I would order the generals to win this war.

There is no diplomacy there is no negotiation.

If airstrikes are effective in eradicating the Taliban and their militant supporters then there need to be more airstrikes. In a war the rules are simple. win.

U.S. troops do not need to be spending time guarding villages and building schools. Goodwill has no place in a war. U.S. troops need to be killing the enemy. This includes individuals that have made the choice to cultivate opium for sale on world markets. Heroin destroys everything it touches. It too must be destroyed. This is a war. The rules are very simple. win.
Summary trials for those who chose to cultivate opium for sale on world markets.

Afghanistan is at the crossroads of major trade routes including the marketing of natural gas. I don't believe the Soviet Union understood the full capability of market economics and how in the end it is markets and not nation building that is going to create peace.

The U.S. has made a substantial investment in Afghanistan there is too much invested for the United States to abandon its position. It does not matter now which administration is responsible for what. This is a war.

Raybo:

Maybe your Viet Nam service will help us figure out what to do. You know, when you told Gold Star Mom Debbie Lee you were a Viet Nam vet.

Let's use that expertiese.
