STATEMENT ON BUSH SPEECH

NH Democratic Party Chair Kathy Sullivan today issued the following statement on President Bush's speech in Manchester this morning:

"It's not a good sign for George Bush that on the very first day he begins to promote his budget around the country, the state's two Republican congressmen refuse to endorse it. Congressmen Bass and Bradley are too scared of the voters to support the President's deep cuts to Medicare, and too controlled by their party to actually speak out against it. Our congressmen can't have it both ways -- they need to decide whether they stand with New Hampshire, or with President Bush and his deep Medicare cuts.

"George Bush's rhetoric about cutting deficits have been proven false after five years in office and the biggest deficits in United State history. The fact is, this budget makes huge cuts to the Medicare that all seniors rely on, and then gives away billions to HMOs and extends tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. If our congressmen had a backbone between them, they would take a stand for our state, instead of trying to please all sides by refusing to take a position."
