Candidates for State Committee Chair.

Recently, the House Education Committee voted Ought to Pass on HB1707 a school choice certificate program bill. I should note that, in committee, the vote came down strictly by party lines with, I believe, only one republican-Representative William Remick- voting against the bill.

Our party platform in the XI Education section states

Excellence in Education

Educating the citizens of New Hampshire is our hope for the future of this great state. We believe that New Hampshire must provide its children an education based upon excellence. We recognize parents as first and primary teachers. We oppose state interference with parental rights and believe that:

Only parents can be entrusted to control the education of their children and choose schools that best suit their children's needs.

Laws should be implemented to encourage school choice and competition and allow all parents to choose the best public, private, charter or home school program for their children.

School vouchers or tuition tax credits should be made available to assist in school choice.

Clearly this is a strong Republican issue and one that should be supported and promoted at state level. This is a golden opportunity for you to show your leadership qualities to the party. There is time for each of you to come forward publicly with a statement in favor of this bill since it will not come to a vote of the House until next week.

Representative Packy Campbell, a sponsor of the bill is very knowledgeable on the ins and outs of this piece of legislation. He can be reached at 765-9101.

It will be an uphill battle for this bill to pass in the house. Therefore, it would also be helpful if you contacted representatives who are marginal republicans, or those who support republican values less than 30% of the time, and urge them to vote with fellow republicans in favor of this important party platform initiative. A response with your plan of action to promote this important republican bill is requested. This letter will be shared with others, including county chairs and members of the press.

Respectfully,

State Representative Clifford Newton
