Senate Transportation Chairman Bob Letourneau (R-Derry) sponsored legislation, Senate Bill 400, a bill requiring highway welcome signs to include the state motto: “Live Free orDie.”

SenateBill 400 was brought forward to etch New Hampshire’s famous state motto into history forever.  Senator Letourneau commented, “New Hampshire is nationally known for its motto and we are finally giving it a prominent home, as it will is displayed on each and every one of our welcome signs.”  Letourneau continued,“From day one we have had bi-partisan support and after lengthy discussions in both the House and Senate, I am pleased that we are seeing the legislation come to fruition.”

Senate President Ted Gatsas (R- Manchester) concluded, “Today is great day for New Hampshire. The history book chronicling ‘Live Free or Die’ just added yet another chapter, after a hard fought battle through the Legislature.  A motto that promotes democracy, such as ours, needs to be displayed at every possibility, especially during times of unrest.”

SenateBill 400 will take effect 60 days after today.
