Today American Family Voices will launch a new campaign urging Congress to call for oversight hearings on the management and security of our ports. The campaign will include phone calls in 15 Congressional districts and an internet petition to Congress.
Six months ago, a deal between the U.S. government and the United Arab Emirates became public. The deal turned over control of operations at 18 U.S. ports to Dubai Ports World, a company run by the government of the United Arab Emirates. When the American public heard about this deal to outsource our port security to a foreign government, Americans were outraged and demanded action from the Bush administration and leaders in Congress. Six months have already passed and nothing has changed - Dubai Ports World is still in control of our ports.
“Dubai promised the sale would be complete by now, yet after all this time this foreign government owned company still controls the security and operations at our ports, and the White House and Congress have done nothing about it,” said Michael Lux, President of American Family Voices. “It’s about time that Congress put their political rhetoric aside, and actually took some action to protect ourports.”
