Young Republicans Nationwide Mourn the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto

Remembering the First Female Prime Minister of a Muslim Country

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- This morning, Americans awoke to news that Former Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated.  Bhutto gave the ultimate sacrifice while coming out of a self-imposed exile to ensure the people of Pakistan would have a fair election on January 8, 2008. She returned to Pakistan October 18 of this year and was immediately the target of a suicide-bomb attack while on route to a rally in Karachi which killed 136 people and injured at least 450.

Today, Bhutto was shot in the neck and the chest just after concluding a rally for the Pakistan People's Party, the opposing political party to current leadership. The gunman blew himself up seconds after firing upon the 2008 Prime Minister Candidate.  Bhutto was rushed to the hospital.  However, she died an hour after the attack.

Jessica Colón, Chairman of the Young Republican National Federation (YRNF) issued the following statement today, "Benazir Bhutto was a pillar of strength for democracy and against extremism.  She was a woman who bravely fought for freedom, even in the face of deadly adversity. In honoring her memory, the quest for true democracy in Pakistan must not stop.  We all have a stake in Mrs. Bhutto's fight.  As
President Ronald Reagan understood, a threat to freedom anywhere is a threat to
freedom everywhere."

Catherine Brinkman, Chairman of the YRNF State Chairman's Association for the Young Republican National Federationacknowledged "Benazir Bhutto was a true leader and believer in democracy.  Her father and two brothers were political leaders, also killed while serving the people of Pakistan.  She knew that there were many who opposed her return to Pakistan and still she went.  A true leader, she did not falter when her ideals were attacked.  Bhutto wanted to bring democracy to Pakistan and gave the ultimate sacrifice.  We must carry on her struggle where she left off."

Karen Sautter, Director of the YRNF Policy Committee affirmed that today she was, "...reminded that only a few people in this life choose to lead their communities, and by doing so, transform the world for all. Benazir Bhutto chose to be that kind of leader with its high stakes and unending sacrifice. Her work has transformed the world.  The courage with which she pursued freedom and democracy has inspired this generation of freedom leaders and will inspire the leaders of generations to come."
