National Religious Expert (and Baptist preacher) Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy Available for Interview
As Presidential candidate Mitt Romney prepares to give a “JFK-style” speech Thursday explaining his Mormon faith to voters, Interfaith Alliance President (and Baptist preacher) Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy is available to provide context around the issue of Presidential politics and religion.
Rev. Gaddy is available to discuss such issues as whether America’s First Freedom is in jeopardy when candidates engage in religious rhetoric on the campaign trail, and the fact that the Founding Fathers specifically exempted religion as a qualification for public office. He stresses that the 2008 election is for President of the United States, not “Pastor-in-Chief.” And that the faith tradition of a candidate is not a legitimate litmus test for determining the candidate’s suitability for the Oval Office.
Every day seems to bring a new story about Presidential politics and religion. But voters and the media must focus on how candidates want to change the country, not how they worship. Dr. Gaddy can also discuss a recent Interfaith Alliance/First Freedom First poll conducted by Greenberg, Quinlan Rosner, Inc. that showed that a strong majority of Americans do not want Presidential candidates to use their religion as a political strategy. In fact, 60 percent of Americans who regularly attend religious services say that presidential candidates should not use their religion or faith to influence voters. (More poll results are available.)
Dr. Gaddy is available for media interviews on the importance of Mitt Romney’s speech – and the dangers of presidential candidates campaigning on the basis of their faith.
Author of over 20 books, including Faith and Politics, the Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy leads the national non-partisan grassroots and educational organizations, The Interfaith Alliance and The Interfaith Alliance Foundation and serves as the Pastor for Preaching and Worship at Northminster (Baptist) Church in Monroe, Louisiana.
Frequently cited by national media on issues relating to religion and politics, he has appeared on CNN’s The World Today with Wolf Blitzer, PBS’s The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, NBC Dateline, NBC Evening News with Tom Brokaw, CNN’s Inside Politics, and ABC’s World News Tonight.
