Forum to Discuss Global Challenges Facing Obama Transition Team
Transition Advisors from Previous Administrations Examine How President-Elect Obama
Will Tackle National Security and Foreign Policy Challenges
Who & What: The Center for U.S. Global Engagement will hold a high-level discussion of the presidential transition and its implications for foreign policy decision-making in the next Administration featuring Paul Begala, Senior Transition Advisor and Counselor to President Bill Clinton, and Michael Gerson, Senior Policy Advisor and Chief Speechwriter to President George W. Bush. The program will be moderated by Jim Lehrer, Executive Editor and Anchor of PBS’ “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” and webcast live at www.usglobalengagement.org.
The event is the capstone of the Center’s bipartisan Impact ’08: Building a Better Safer World initiative calling on the presidential candidates “to revitalize America’s moral and pragmatic leadership by making greater investments in our diplomatic and development programs.” During the 2008 election, both Barack Obama and John McCain answered Impact ’08’s call, incorporating into their national security strategies a “smart power” approach that augments a strong defense with new investments in our civilian-led tools of diplomacy and development. President-elect Obama has committed to the most in-depth and far reaching platform embracing “smart power” of any candidate in history.
