(Concord, NH) On Friday November 7, 2008, twenty-eight newly hired employees graduated from the New Hampshire Department of Corrections Academy program. Academy #89 was comprised of seventeen Corrections Officers, two Probation/Parole Officers and nine non-uniformed employees who will report to their new assignments immediately.
The mandatory nine-week pre-service academy provided new staff with the tools to succeed as Corrections employees. The employees received training in offender management, inter-personal communication, emergency preparedness, CPR, ethics, basic New Hampshire law, health and fitness, and a variety of other skills. They resolved a series of scenarios to simulate the unpredictable challenges that they face daily behind prison walls.
Security staff attended the full nine weeks while non-uniformed employees primarily attended the educational portion of the Academy. Security staff must be certified or receive training in firearms, defensive tactics, radio use, cell extractions, and searches.
Of the seventeen graduating officers, six will be assigned to the New Hampshire State Prison in Concord, seven to the Northern NH Correctional Facility in Berlin, two to the New Hampshire State Prison for Women in Goffstown, and two to the Lakes Region Facility in Laconia. The non-uniformed employees include five medical/mental health professionals, two maintenance supervisors, one program administrator and one assistant vocational education professor. The Probation/Parole Officers will be assigned to the Claremont and Nashua District Offices.
