Washington, DC – Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter today sent a letter to President Bush supporting Governor Lynch’s request for a major disaster declaration in New Hampshire. The recent ice storm and severe weather have had a devastating effect on families, businesses, and communities throughout the state. A major disaster declaration would release federal funds to assist in the recovery.
“This has been a very difficult year for the people in New Hampshire,” stated Shea-Porter. “They have endured a number of weather disasters. I am extremely proud of the way New Hampshire citizens have cared for one another, but we will need federal resources, and I will work to secure them.”
The text of the letter is below.

Dear Mr. President:
I write in support of Governor John Lynch’s request for a major disaster declaration for the State of New Hampshire. Governor Lynch has requested the declaration for all ten counties in New Hampshire as a result of the severe weather that began as a devastating ice storm on December 11, 2008. The severe weather has continued since then, bringing snow, rain, heavy winds, and even more ice to the state.
The effect of these storms on our local communities has been extensive. FEMA has completed a preliminary damage assessment that shows over $10 million in damages. At the height of the ice storm, more than 400,000 customers – almost half the state – were without electricity. Downed power lines and poles, tree limbs and other debris have had to be removed or repaired. Many residents were forced to evacuate their homes and businesses and schools were closed. The local economies have been hit hard by this storm at a time when many businesses were already reeling from the economic downturn.
The Governor is requesting that both the Public Assistance Program and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program be made available for all ten counties in New Hampshire. In addition, the state is currently assessing the damage to homeowners and businesses to determine if individual assistance is needed.
Again, I fully support the Governor’s request and ask that you expedite the major disaster declaration and availability of the Public Assistance Program and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for the entire State of New Hampshire. I appreciate your consideration of this request and look forward to working with you to provide any available Federal assistance to the people of New Hampshire.
Member of Congress
