DSCC -Sen Sununu Votes Against Health Care For Pregnant Women

Last night, New Hampshire Senator John Sununu voted against allowing pregnant women to be eligible for coverage under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. Sununu joined a small minority in the Senate to oppose this vital measure protecting expectant mothers.

“Onlythe most out of touch members of the Senate could oppose providing health care to pregnant women, but that’s exactly what John Sununu did last night,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “Providing health care for expectant mothers shouldn’t even be a close call, but John Sununu showed last night he either doesn’t get it, or he doesn’tcare.”

Prenatal Care is Critical to Children’s Health . “Babies born to mothers who received no prenatal care are three times more likely to be born at low birth weight, and five times more likely to die, than those whose mothers received prenatal care.” [Maternal and Child Health Bureau, HHS,accessed 3/14/08]
