Residents speak out about being uninsured, go door-to-door to collect health care stories
Manchester, New Hampshire – Various New Hampshire health care advocacy groups are participating in the national Cover the Uninsured Week (April 27th-May 3rd) by hosting a short press conference followed by a health care canvass in local neighborhoods. Currently, there are 150,000 uninsured New Hampshire residents – roughly equal to the populations of Manchester and Concord combined – which represents a 16% increase in the number of uninsured over the last year. Nationally, eight out of 10 people who are uninsured come from working families.
"Every day, more and more people are losing their health care coverage – including our family, friends and neighbors," said Dr. Travis Harker, a family doctor at Concord Family Health Center. "Cover the Uninsured Week is a time for us to highlight the need for comprehensive health care reform and reach out to people in our community who already know the danger of a health care system that leaves out working families."
Small business owners and Health Care Voters Lynn and Barry Goldman of Windham are among those who will share personal testimony and health care facts before going door-to-door in Manchester.
"My husband and I used to have health care coverage until the insurance companies started squeezing small businesses out of the market by increasing the premiums," said Lynn. "Now we can only afford coverage for one of us."
"Without insurance, you can't even do basic things such as yearly physicals to find out what you have or don't have," said Barry. "Everyone should have access to quality, affordable health care."
