NRCC - Amid Soaring Gas Prices, Hodes & Shea-Porter Votes for “Gargantuan” Tax Hike

Hodes and Shea-Porter Can’t Run Away from Her Long Record on Hiking Taxes on the Middle Class

Washington- Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Rep. Paul Hodes (NH-02) won’t be seen as a friend of the taxpayer this fall after she voted for a record-shattering $3 trillion dollar budget that increases taxes on Americans by $683 billion (House Roll Call 382) . Thanks to Hodes & Shea-Porter's vote today, a family of four earning just $40,000 today would see a tax increase of $2,345 in 2011.

Make no mistake: This tax hike is gargantuan. … On average, 116 million taxpayers will see a jump of $1,800 in their annual tax bill. Some 48 million married couples - the heart of the middle class that Democrats say they want to help - will be slapped with an average increase of $3,007. Even the elderly will take a hit - $2,181 on average. … Quite a week's work for one Congress.” (Investor’s Business Daily, 6/4/08)

As the national average for a gallon of gas inches to $4 – a 71 percent spike since Speaker Pelosi was voted into power – Hodes and Shea-Porter and the Democrats have seemingly forgotten their promise to voters less than two years ago, that “Democrats stand for… finding meaningful solutions to our energy crisis,” and that they would “not heap mountains of debt on future generations,” (Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Conference, 6/16/2006) . This budget that Hodes and Shea-Porter voted for does nothing to address the rapidly rising cost of gas, and will also cause the national debt to reach nearly $10 trillion dollars by the end of this year.

Pelosi claimed that Americans should “not at all” be worried that House Democrats would raise taxes on middle-class families, but Hodes and Shea-Porter in fact voted to impose the largest tax increase in American history, sparing no taxpayer from the Democrats’ tax-hiking agenda (Press Conference, July 28, 2006) :

  • Despite Pelosi’s pledge to “make the child tax credit more generous for lower-income families,” this budget will cut the child tax credit in half, costing families an additional $500 per child (CongressDaily PM, 10/19/2006)
  • Even though Dem Leader Rahm Emanuel acknowledged that “eliminating the capital gains tax on the middle class … will help make sure America is a country where work leads to wealth” this budget will impose a greater tax on investments costing $181 billion (The Plan, Rahm Emanuel & Bruce Reed, Page 113)
  • The Democrats’ tax increases will hit every single taxpayer including lower income taxpayers, married couples, small businesses, seniors and even the deceased.

“ Hodes and Shea-Porter showed just how out of touch she is with reality by voting to raise taxes on America’s working families, as they struggle to pay for rising food and gas bills,” said NRCC Spokesman Ken Spain. “Tax increases don’t make our economy stronger, they only weaken America. Hodes and Shea-Porter should stop acting like a lapdog to party leaders and put the people of her district first.”
