Washington, DC—Today, Representatives Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes sent a letter to President Bush urging him to support Governor Lynch’s request for federal disaster aid for the five New Hampshire counties affected by last week’s storm.  The full text of the letter is below:

July 28, 2008

The Honorable George W. Bush

President of the United States of America

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Bush:

Last Thursday, July 24th, a tornado ripped through New Hampshire.  Today, New Hampshire's Governor Lynch asked you to declare a major disaster in our state.  This request has been made for the five counties affected by last week’s severe weather – Belknap, Carroll, Merrimack, Strafford and Rockingham – all of which experienced extensive damage from the tornado, severe rain, and winds that ripped through New Hampshire last Thursday afternoon.

We are urging you to act quickly upon this request.  We have toured these areas and have seen first hand the damage and devastation inflicted to our state.  More than 100 homes have been destroyed, and many businesses were damaged.  In the event that federal and local cost sharing may apply, we would also ask you to consider lifting the local match requirements, so that our communities can begin recovering as quickly as possible.

Thank you in advance for your rapid response to New Hampshire’s urgent request.
