Washington, DC— On the day before the start of the Annual District Work Period, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter used her time in Washington to stand up for our nation’s military families and veterans. Today, Shea-Porter introduced a critical piece of legislation, the “Protecting Military Family Financial Benefits Act" (H.R. 6774).
“Our men and women in uniform deserve to know that if something happens to them, their children will be taken care of,” said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. “The Protecting Military Family Financial Benefits Act will help ensure that our service members who are single parents have appropriate survivor benefits.”
The Protecting Military Family Financial Benefits Act will allow single-parent military personnel with dependent children to designate guardians or caretakers to receive Death Gratuity benefits and annuities for care of dependent children under the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP). This legislation will help ensure that if a single-parent service member is killed while deployed, their minor children and families are able to receive the benefits they need to care for these children.
Congresswoman Shea-Porter has a strong record of standing up for our nation’s service members and their families. Earlier this week, Shea-Porter introduced legislation which requires that veterans in each of the 48 contiguous states have access to at least one full-service hospital of the Veterans Health Administration or receive comparable services provided by contract.
