Inside Kelly Ayotte's first ever campaign finance report there is a $1,000 donation from a political action committee controlled by former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, a strong conservative who has made some controversial remarks about homosexuals in the past.

While the Santorum donation will certainly set off liberals and provide fodder for a Democratic opponent in the general election, it might actually help her with the Republican base as Ayotte prepares for a Republican primary.

In 2006, Santorum was defeated for re-election by the largest percentage for any incumbent Senator in 26 years.

He became a national story in 2003 for this quote,"Every society in the history of man has upheld the institution of marriage as a bond between a man and a woman. Why? Because society is based on one thing: that society is based on the future of the society. And that's what? Children. Monogamous relationships. In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That's not to pick on homosexuality. It's not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be. It is one thing. And when you destroy that you have a dramatic impact on the quality"

Santorum is reportedly to be exploring a presidential run. He visited Iowa earlier this month.
