NRSC - Hodes' So-Called 'Stimulus' Fails, National Unemployment Hits 10.2%

WASHINGTON – National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Press Secretary Amber Wilkerson Marchand issued the following statement in response to the Labor Department’s announcement today that the nation’s unemployment rate climbed to 10.2 percent in October, topping the 10 percent mark for the first time in 26 years.

“Today’s devastating announcement that our nation’s unemployment rate has reached 10.2 percent defies assurances from the Obama Administration and Democrats who supported the massive $787 billion ‘stimulus’ bill nine months ago that their legislation would prevent unemployment rates from surpassing 8 percent.

“Clearly, Paul Hodes’ strategy to throw more money at New Hampshire’s ailing economy has failed, and now he is asking the families, seniors, and small business owners in his state to trust him to spend another trillion dollars in taxpayer money in order to implement a Washington takeover of America’s health care system. Even Hodes’ own Democrat Governor John Lynch has rejected this legislation because the bill would be ‘a budget buster’ for his state.

“If Hodes has learned anything from supporting the stimulus debacle, he should know that his health care strategy is equally doomed and will lead to more job loss and higher health costs for New Hampshire voters who are already struggling to find work.

“Hodes has a real opportunity as early as tomorrow to reject the House Democrats’ trillion dollar health care bill and tell President Obama and Nancy Pelosi that Democrats need to go back to the drawing board with Republicans to come up with a real bipartisan health care solution that will lower health care expenses for voters in the Granite State.

“If Paul Hodes decides to toe the Party line on this contentious legislation, he will absolutely be held accountable in 2010 for the disastrous economic plans and misuse of taxpayer dollars that he’s so eagerly supported.”
