Congresswoman Shea-Porter - Bipartisan Lawmakers Call for Additional Home-Energy Assistance

WASHINGTON, DC – Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 11:45 a.m. in 2253 Rayburn H.O.B., Congresswoman Carol Shea Porter will join with Members of Congress, community leaders, and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) advocates in a bi-partisan push to include $1 billion in home-energy assistance funding in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and to fully fund the LIHEAP program in FY 2010 at its most recent authorization of $5.1 billion.

The program is facing new challenges this year due to the economic crisis, rising levels of unemployment and continuing high energy prices. Applications for LIHEAP services have reached record levels. Funding in the stimulus package would be used immediately by these households to help them pay their energy bills, jumpstart the economy, and support small businesses that deliver fuels.
