Meetings Will Emphasize the Urgency of Passing Health Care Reform this Year
Washington, DC –Organizing for America (OFA), a project of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) dedicated to supporting President Obama's agenda for change, will hold Health Care Organizing Kickoffs in households across the nation this weekend marking the official launch of a grassroots campaign in support of President Obama’s efforts to reform America’s broken health care system. Thousands of events have been planned in local communities across all 50 states and tens of thousands of concerned citizens have already pledged to attend a Health Care Organizing Kickoffin their town. During these meetings, participants will watch a special message from the President, discuss his three principles for reform anddevelop a plan for securing health care reform that reduces costs for all families, protects people’s choice of doctors and health plans and assures affordable, quality health care for all Americans.
“For American families, the status quo is simply unacceptable,” saidOrganizing for America Executive Director Mitch Stewart. “As the President has noted, our health care system is broken and for millions of Americans it simply no longer works for them or their families. Premiums are rising four times faster than wages, millions lack any health insurance coverage at all and others are denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. Health care costs are crippling the budgets of families, individuals, businesses and governments and we will never fix our economy or get our fiscal house in order until we fix our health care system. If all this sounds urgent - it is - and that is why OFA is kicking offthis grassroots activity in all 50 statesto get health care reform done and get it donenow. We simply can't wait any longer to act."
As President Obama told supporters and organizers on a recent conference call, Americans cannot afford to wait another year for health care reform. Forty-five million Americans lack health insurance and every day more are priced out of the system by skyrocketing premiums or denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. President Obama has called on Americans for action and to become a part of the solution by laying out three basic principles that should be a part of any successful health care reform; reducing the rising cost of health care for families and business, guaranteeing Americans the choice of their own coverage and doctor and finally ensuring that quality, affordable health care is available to all Americans.
