As Kelly Ayotte continues to hide from all local reporters, New Hampshire conservative activists and Republican party leaders are growing increasingly resentful of Washington Republicans and lobbyists for running her show. But don’t take my word for it....
NH GOP CHAIRMAN SUNUNU: NEW HAMPSHIRE DOESN’T RESPOND WELLTO CANDIDATES DESIGNATED FROM OUTSIDE THE STATE
“I hope the NRSC understands that New Hampshire doesn’t really respond well to having candidates designated from outside the state, and I don’t think it would be in Kelly Ayotte’s best interest to have something like that happen,” Sununu told The Hill.
UNION LEADER EDITORIAL: PARTY BOSSES IN DC SHOULD “BUTT OUT”
The party bosses in D.C. think they know better than the locals how to pick winning candidates. They don't. They should butt out and let the people who actually live here decide.”
NH GOP STRATEGIST PATRICK HYNES: NEW HAMPSHIRE REPUBLICANS HAVE “REFLEXIVE DESIRE TO BE LEFT ALONE”
“Washington, D.C., told us that we had to vote for Bob Dole, and New Hampshire Republicans voted for Pat Buchanan. They told us we had to vote for George W. Bush; we voted for John McCain. They told us to vote for Mitt Romney; we voted for John McCain,” said Patrick Hynes, a Republican consultant and Granite State veteran. “New Hampshire Republicans have a reflexive desire to be left alone.”
NH CONSERVATIVE ACTIVIST DOUG LAMBERT: “AMAZING A CANDIDATE WOULD LAUNCH CAMPAIGN FROM DC”
It's pretty amazing that a candidate for a Senate seat from New Hampshire would seemingly launch her campaign down in D.C. among lobbyists and various so-called top senators, as if she's the toast of the town," said conservative activist Doug Lambert, who runs the GraniteGrok.com blog. "It leaves us in New Hampshire totally in the dark," Lambert said.
NH GOP CONSULTANT: “IT’S A MISTAKE FOR HER TO BE HOLDING EVENTS WITH LOBBYISTS IN DC”
“It’s a mistake for her to be holding events with lobbyists in Washington, presumably offering them assurances that she hasn’t offered people in New Hampshire,” said one veteran Republican consultant who has not picked a favorite candidate.
UNION LEADER: FIRST AYOTTE HIRE IS A WASHINGTON LOBBYIST
Daffron, the chief operating officer of a Washington-based lobbying firm, the Jefferson Consulting Group, has worked in the past for Sens. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, William Cohen of Maine and Charles Percy of Illinois. He also managed Elizabeth Dole's brief presidential campaign in 1999. Daffron recently managed or consulted for Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who, as we have reported, has been befriended by Ayotte. The state Democratic Party points out that the Jefferson Consulting web site lists Daffron as one of its "lobbying professionals," and like us, wonders who Daffron is lobbying for. We've called him for this and other comments, but have received no response.
NH REPUBLICAN OPERATIVE: AYOTTE NOT A GOOD PUBLIC SPEAKER, FUNDRAISING CAPACITY UNKNOWN
Another neutral Republican operative in New Hampshire — who also declined to speak on the record — sad that many people think Ayotte is not a good public speaker, plus her fundraising prowess is uncertain. “Her fundraising capacity is a complete unknown because she hasn’t been working for any charities,” said the operative. “I don’t know if she’s ever gotten on the phone and asked for money from anyone before.”
