NHDP - Republican Gubernatorial Candidate John Stephen Flounders in Debate on Close-Up with NHDP Executive Director Mike Brunelle

Poor performance for likely Republican candidate for governor has some questioning candidate's viability

Concord - On WMUR's Close-Up last Sunday, NHDP Executive Director Mike Brunelle and likely Republican candidate for governor John Stephen went head-to-head on the major issues important to Granite State voters.

But the outcome of the debate did not bode well for the likely Republican gubernatorial candidate.  As James Pindell of the NH Political Report put it "Stephen gets gov campaign preview in his face."  The story on NH Political Report highlights a clip from WMUR's CloseUp where Mike Brunelle holds John Stephen to task for being fiscally irresponsible as Health and Human Services secretary under Governor Benson.

In the clip Brunelle goes on the attack, reminding Stephen of "leaving people out in the cold" as Health and Human Services secretary and then "having to go back and ask for over $400 million more dollars to fix [his] budget."  Stephen's inability to respond to the charge highlights the stark hypocrisy of recent GOP attacks on the responsible and balanced budget passed by Democrats.

The misstep by Stephen was only one of many over the course of the debate, and his poor performance has many in the state now questioning the candidate's viability.
