NH Sierra Club Endorses Lynch, 44 Candidates for State Office

CONCORD, NH—The New Hampshire Chapter of the Sierra Club has released its list of endorsed candidates running for New Hampshire state offices in the 2010 elections. The endorsements include 30 NH State Representatives, 12 State Senators, 2 Executive Councilors and the incumbent Governor John Lynch. Of the total 45 endorsed candidates, 23 are women and 22 men. They all share the same value: to care for the environment when they vote in the State House.

“We are very please to announce today that the New Hampshire Sierra Club officially endorses for election these Environmental Champions of our state,” said Jerry Curran, the Political Chair for the New Hampshire Chapter.

“These candidates are our best hope for preserving clean air and clean water and protecting the wild places for the people of New Hampshire,” stated Curran. “The incumbents worked hard to reduce state energy bills by supporting energy efficiency measures for state buildings supported by Governor John Lynch.  They helped pass programs that will help homeowners do more to curb climate change and reduce energy costs. The new candidates showed their support for key environmental issues facing the state with creative problem solving, not business as usual.”

“They were selected for endorsement based on responses to an in-depth questionnaire, voting record, and history of environmental involvement. Endorsement by the NH Sierra Club gives the candidates access to the Sierra Club’s New Hampshire membership list and in some cases volunteers to help with their campaigns and financial support.”

The New Hampshire Sierra Club has now endorsed John Lynch in all four of his gubernatorial Campaigns. The list of all of the endorsed candidates and available quotations are included here and appear here:

NH Senate Dist 7 Candidate Michele Tremblay: “The New Hampshire advantage is our commitment to natural resource conservation that fuels our economy through tourism, forestry, hunting and fishing, agriculture, clean air and water, and a quality of life that keeps and attracts employers.”

NH Dist 5 Senator and Candidate Matthew Houde: “I would say that I am most proud of co-sponsoring and working to get HB 1554 -- allowing municipalities to establish energy efficiency and clean energy districts -- through the Senate this year.  As you know, the bill was designed to help property owners help themselves by making improvements for energy efficiency and clean energy in their homes and businesses.”

NH Dist 24 Senator and Candidate Martha Fuller Clark: “As chair of the Senate Energy, Environment and Economic Development Committee, I am very appreciative of the NH Sierra Club endorsement of the work I have done to improve our environment.  I am committed to continuing to work with the Sierra Club, other environmental groups, and business to protect our natural resources, reduce environmental pollution and promote renewable energy alternatives.  Protecting and enhancing New Hampshire's environment is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do to ensure a strong economy in the 21st century.”

NH Dist 12 Senator and Candidate Peggy Gilmour: “One of the most important decisions my husband and I made was to do whatever we could to make our family environmentally friendly.  Our children, and now our grandchildren, grew up thinking nearly everything can be composted or recycled, that laundry dries best on the clothesline, and that all hot water comes from those solar things on the roof!”

NH Dist 21 Senator and Candidate Amanda Merrill: “I look forward to working once again with the Sierra Club as the Senate considers legislation important to the future of energy and environmental policy in New Hampshire.”

NH Dist 16 Candidate Kathleen Kelley: “I am proud to receive the endorsement of the Sierra Club because i believe that the preservation of New Hampshire's beauty and natural resources is a key element in ensuring a strong and resilient economy for future generations.”
