Shea-Porter Introduces Legislation to Protect Consumers Within Mail Order Pharmacy System

Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter introduced legislation that will place mail order pharmacy prescription drug decisions in the hands of patients and providers rather than in the hands of insurance companies.  Shea-Porter’s bill - H.R. 6255 - would ban mail order pharmacies from substituting a brand name drug for a generic drug without first notifying the customer, and then receiving authorization from the prescriber.  This issue was first brought to the attention of Congresswoman Shea-Porter by constituents in the First District.
“Health care decisions should be made between patients and their doctors, not insurance companies,” said Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter. “This bill will provide patients with more choices, and that’s why I introduced it.”
