CEI Daily - PETA Protests, Fannie & Freddie, and Condom Mandates

PETA Protests

PETA protested outside the Capital Grille on Friday. PETA argues that meat-eating is contributing to global warming because cows release methane gas into the atmosphere.

CEI staffers staged a mock counter-protest next to PETA to celebrate people's right to eat meat.

Fannie & Freddie

The media is now reporting that the bailout of Fannie and Freddie will cost double original estimates.

Senior Counsel Hans Bader explains why the public should be outraged.

"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the corrupt government-sponsored mortgage giants that contributed to the mortgage crisis by engaging in fraud and misrepresenting subprime mortgages as prime.  Earlier, the Obama administration showered their executives with $42 million in pay, even as Obama’s pay czar was ordering productive private-sector banks to chop the pay of their executives and traders (leading one bank to dump a profitable trading operation), and imposing new taxes and burdens on private banks (but not Fannie and Freddie)."

Condom Mandates

A California porn actor recently tested positive for HIV, renewing calls for a law enforcing condom use in the porn industry.

Policy Analyst Michelle Minton argues that the porn industry should regulate itself.

"In addition to problems with enforcement, there’s also the problem of personal choice and freedom of expression. In the end it is the individual actor’s choice to get into the adult entertainment industry and their choice whether or not they wear a condom."
