Shea-Porter Statement on Raising the Debt Ceiling

“The previous president and the former Congresses should have had a plan to pay for the two wars, they should have also paid for the Medicare Part D tab, and they should not have given enormous tax cuts to the top 1%. We are stuck paying the bills because the US is obligated. I was an original cosponsor of pay-as-you-go (PAYGO), I am a cosponsor of the House version of the Senate’s Gregg-Conrad bill to create a debt commission, and I have consistently voted against Congressional pay raises for as long as the middle class gets stuck with all this debt.  We must get our financial house in order.”
