Harvey Milk Day of Action, AIDS Anniversary Event Features 1984 Documentary “ The Times of Harvey Milk” at Keene State College Putnam Theater
(Keene, NH) AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region (ASMR) and the KSC Film Society, Center for Health & Wellness Office, Organization of Wellness Leaders and Wellness Living and Learning Community are collaborating to present the first Harvey Milk Day of Action event in New Hampshire by screening the award-winning 1984 documentary, “The Times of Harvey Milk” on Saturday, May 1 at 4pm. Milk protégé, activist and AIDS Memorial Quilt founder, Cleve Jones, will speak prior to the documentary screening. The event kicks off the 20th anniversary celebration of ASMR and is free and open to the public.
Jones worked with Milk on his political campaigns in the Castro District of San Francisco up until the time of Milk’s death on November 27, 1978, when he was shot and killed by fellow City Councilor Dan White who later went on to claim the now infamous “Twinkie defense” as the reason he killed Milk. More recently, Jones served as historical consultant for the 2009 film Milk starring Sean Penn in the leading role.
Milk's life work, focusing on inclusion of the gay community in San Francisco politics and the broader human rights struggle, is documented with news footage and personal stories of those people who were involved in the movement he created. The documentary won eight awards in 1985 including Best Documentary from the Academy, Boston Society of Film Critics, International Documentary Association, New York Film Critics Circle Award, Peabody Award, Sundance Film Festival, San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival and News & Documentary Emmy Awards.
The legacy of Harvey Milk will be honored nationwide on May 22, which would have been his 80th birthday, with a Day of Action called for by the group Equality Across America. The purpose of this activity is to demand full equality for all LGBT people. Prior to the film at 3:30 in the lobby of the Putnam Theatre there will be a birthday party honoring Milk and the 20th “birthday” of ASMR, complete with cake and party favors. www.equalityacrossamerica.org/harveymilkdayofaction For more information, contact ASMR at 357-6855, www.asmronline.org, or the Putnam Theatre listings www.keene.edu/putnam/films.cfm
