AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region welcomes Dr. Carl DeMatteo, Keene Mayor Dale Pregent and AIDS activist Cleve Jones at the agency's 20th anniversary celebration, "An Evening With Cleve Jones," on Saturday, May 1, 7-11pm, Heberton Hall, Winter Street, Keene, NH.
As founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt founder and historical consultant on the 2009 Oscar-winning film Milk, Jones was an integral part of early-80’s activism. Those efforts resulted in the beginning of the modern-day LGBT movement, led by Harvey Milk in San Francisco, and acknowledgment of the devastation caused by the AIDS pandemic which will soon reach the 30-year landmark.
Keene Mayor Dale Pregent will read a proclamation in honor of the agency’s milestone. Dr. Carl DeMatteo, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, will be presented with a Founder’s Award.
Earlier in the day on 5/1, the Keene State College Film Society, Center for Health & Wellness Office and Organization of Wellness Leaders and Wellness Living and Learning Community are collaborating to present the first HARVEY MILK DAY OF ACTION event in New Hampshire by screening the award-winning 1984 documentary, “The Times of Harvey Milk” at 4pm. Milk protégé, activist and AIDS Memorial Quilt founder, Cleve Jones, will speak prior to the screening at the KSC Putnam Theatre.
The legacy of Harvey Milk will be honored nationwide on May 22, which would save been his 80th birthday, with a Day of Action called for by Equality cross America. Prior to the film at 3:30 in the lobby of the Putnam Theatre there will be a birthday party honoring Milk and the 20th “birthday” of ASMR, complete with cake and party favors.
Doors open that evening at 7p, dinner and program 7:45, dancing 9-11. Cash bar. Tickets $35 each, $65 couple, table of 8 for $240. Purchase tickets online with VISA/MC at www.asmronline.org or by calling 603.357.6855.
