NHDP Chair Calls on Senator Gregg to Support President Obama's Nominee for the Supreme Court

Concord - Today, President Barack Obama nominated Elena Kagan to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court.  Elena Kagan is currently serving as Solicitor General - a position that the United States Senate approved her for by a vote of 61-31.  Senator Judd Gregg was among the seven Republican Senators voting in favor of her nomination.

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley issued the following statement praising the President's choice and calling on New Hampshire's Republican Senator to support the distinguished nominee.

"Elena Kagan is a brilliant legal scholar with a distinguished record of public service.  There is no doubt that she would make an excellent Supreme Court Justice."

"Judd Gregg, along with six other Republican Senators, recognized her stellar qualifications when they supported her as Solicitor General.  He should do so again and support a quick confirmation of this outstanding nominee."

"Solicitor General Kagan has an impressive resume.  Prior to serving as President Obama's Solicitor General, Kagan clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, served as Associate Counsel and Deputy Assistant to President Clinton, and was the first female Dean of Harvard Law School."

"It is my hope that Judd Gregg and Senate Republicans will not play politics with the president's nomination. If she was qualified enough to receive their vote for Solicitor General, then she should receive their support this time as well."
