The first of three Rainbow Ladies benefit performances in 2010 supporting AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region is scheduled for Friday, May 21 at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel, Winchester Street, Keene, NH. “A Rose is a Rose” will be hosted by Mama Mayhem and features favorite performers Mama, Mercedes, Eva, Fontaine and Sofia.
A special addition to the evening will celebrate the legacy of the first openly gay elected official and LGBT activist, Harvey Milk, whose life’s work focused on inclusion of the gay community in politics and the broader human rights struggle. Milk, a San Francisco city councilor, was shot to death on November 27, 1978 by fellow city councilor Dan White who claimed the now infamous “Twinkie defense” as the reason he killed Milk. The award-winning 2009 film, Milk, starred Sean Penn in the title role.
Milk will be honored nationwide on May 22, which would have been his 80th birthday, with a Day of Action called for by the group Equality Across America demanding full equality for all LGBT people. A birthday party for Milk will be held at intermission. http://equalityacrossamerica.org/harveymilkdayaction/Equality_Across_America.html
