Few places on earth are more beautiful and inspiring than Dixville Notch. And while drinking in nature this time of year feeds our eternal souls, good citizenship preserves our world.
When it comes to practicing good citizenship Dixville Notch is always "First in the Nation." What an honor to have New Hampshire, our small state ... our home, play such a pivotal role in creating the national citizenship agenda.
The picture above was snapped of me in the ballot room of the Balsams last week. I was on a campaign swing through the northernmost reaches of New Hampshire.
The 17 registered voters of Dixville Notch gather in this room to be the first in the nation to vote. They close the voting one minute after midnight. International media often cover the results!

Theodore Roosevelt at war
My favorite historical President is Theodore Roosevelt (although I must admit that Ronald Reagan is my favorite of all time.) Being in the arena isn't easy for any of us, and all of us have an "arena" that we must live in. I want to encourage you this week to choose to live enthusiastically in your arena, no matter the circumstances that surround you today.
Consider the observations of Theodore Roosevelt on this subject:
It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.
I'm finding that this campaign is a great opportunity. As my team is assembling around me there isn't a day that goes by that I'm not provided with opportunities to overcome, and to help others on my team excel as well.
Oh sure, we're going to make mistakes along the way. Everyone does. We're not, however, going to let any of those missteps slow us down. I know that you want us to keep moving, and stay on the straight and narrow. And we will!
That is why I'm so grateful for each and every one of you, especially those who offer their honest opinions about the campaign as it develops. I want to assure you that I review each and every message, especially the brutally honest ones. They challenge us, and help us do better the next time.
