NRSC - Will Paul Hodes Denounce Harry Reid's Racist Rhetoric Against Hispanic Americans?

WASHINGTON – Embattled U.S. Representative Paul Hodes (D-NH) has eagerly helped U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) ram the Washington Democrats’ out-of-control spending agenda through Congress, driving our national debt past $13 trillion while failing to create much-needed jobs. But thus far, Hodes has failed to denounce Reid’s recent racist statements questioning how “anyone with Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.”

“Paul Hodes needs to explain immediately: Does he agree with Harry Reid’s racist rhetoric against Hispanic Americans, or will he fully denounce this inappropriate and condescending commentary? This election is about issues, and there’s no place in this debate for intolerant, racist rhetoric from Harry Reid. Paul Hodes either agrees with Reid’s prejudiced comments, or he does not, but he can’t have it both ways,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Press Secretary Amber Marchand.

Notably, Hodes has called Reid a “great leader,” and the pair have repeatedly raised campaign cash together, even sneaking off to Canada last month to raise money from trial lawyers.  Hodes has accepted at least $10,000 from Reid’s Political Action Committee (PAC).

Background Information:

Reid Brought Hodes To The Senate Democrats’ Luncheon In The Spring Of 2009. “So it was perhaps not surprising to see the leading Democratic candidate, Representative Paul W. Hodes, pop in to the Senate Democrats’ weekly luncheon today. He was a familiar face, slightly out of place – or 18 months early in the view of optimistic Democrats. A spokesman for Mr. Hodes, Mark Bergman, said that the congressman had been invited to the luncheon by the majority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada.” (David M. Herszenhorn, “Blue Hampshire On Democrats’ Lunch Menu,” The Caucus Blog On The New York Times,, Posted 5/19/09)

Reid will be the special guest at a June 3 event for Hodes, who is the only announced candidate - Democrat or Republican - for retiring Sen. Judd Gregg's (R) seat. . . . Tickets for the event start at $5,000 per political action committee and $2,400 per individual, with decreasing levels of financial support.” (Shira Toeplitz, “Reid To Headline Event For Hodes’ Senate Bid,” Roll Call, 5/26/2009)

Hodes Went To Vancouver, Canada To Fundraise Along With Harry Reid. “Hodes went to Vancouver, Canada, to raise money for his campaign last weekend. He wasn’t alone. Proceeds from the event were shared among 12 candidates, with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid getting 20 percent . . . .” (John DiStaso, “‘Granite State Debates’ To Be Held In Sept., Oct.”The [Manchester, NH] Union Leader, 7/15/10)
