Statement from NHDP Chair Ray Buckley on John Stephen Surviving the GOP Gubernatorial Primary

Concord - New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement on John Stephen's defeat of Jack Kimball, Karen Testerman, and Frank Emiro in the Republican primary for governor.

"Stephen may be the worst candidate to run for governor of New Hampshire since former disgraced Governor Craig Benson. He is a career bureaucrat with a long record of questionable ethical decisions and irresponsible spending increases.

"During his failed tenure as Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Stephen, routinely asked for double digit increases in his budget, hid a secret plan to slash Medicare funding from New Hampshire citizens, and tried to hide a 70 million dollar accounting error from legislators.  As a result, one state senator called him the most untrustworthy person in state government, and even members of his own party raised concerns about his honesty.

"And Stephen's record running for office is no better.  During his failed Congressional campaign in 2002, Stephen's own staff members alleged that he tried to bypass federal campaign finance laws.  At a time when New Hampshire is facing a number of serious challenges, the voters will be looking for someone they can trust.  John Stephen has proven that isn't him."
