Dear Judge Silverstein,

The Boston Globe reported on August 28th 2010, that Caritas Christi Health Care - the six hospital group affiliated with the Archdiocese of Boston - is seeking your approval to buy Landmark Medical Center, a 214-bed community hospital in Woonsocket, RI for an undisclosed sum.

It is deeply troubling that Caritas Christi has been less than straightforward with the people of NH, MA and RI about the Landmark deal before you, and also the proposed acquisition of Caritas by Steward Healthcare System LLC, a subsidiary of Cerberus Capital Management LP.

Caritas Christi, the Archdiocese of Boston, Cerberus/Steward and AG Martha Coakley owe the public a complete account of what has transpired to date, and what their plans are, including complete financial disclosure and future projections. Complete transparency is essential in a deal of this magnitude, involving hundreds of millions of dollars, 73,000 inpatient discharges and 238,000 Emergency Department visits yearly.

In the interests of all involved, the Coalition To Save Catholic Health Care is asking you not to proceed further until full public disclosures have been made.

Yours Truly,

John O’Gorman

C. C. Attorney General Patrick Lynch and Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence.
