WHERE IS YOUR STATE ON AUL'S "LIFE LIST"?
For the sixth year in row, Americans United for Life released the “Life List” – a ranking of all 50 states based on the way each deals with a comprehensive list of life issues – from euthanasia to abortion. AUL CEO and President Dr. Charmaine Yoest said that the model legislation AUL specializes in and the state-based approach to protecting life in the law is “changing the momentum towards life at the state level. We are seeing a cultural shift toward protecting life and rolling back the tide of unrestricted abortions that Roe v. Wade produced.”
“The results reveal that legislative action at the state level is turning the tide toward life with strategic refinement of the law,” said Yoest. AUL has produced 38 pieces of model legislation and been influential in drafting opt-out language for states that do not wish to pay for President Obama’s health care plan that includes abortion coverage.
In the top 5 spots in 2011 are 1: Oklahoma, 2: Louisiana, 3: Pennsylvania, 4: Arkansas and 5: Texas. At the bottom of the list were New Jersey, Vermont, Hawaii, California and Washington State. For the complete listing and executive summary of the project, click here.
The “Life List” is possible because of AUL’s Defending Life 2011. This legal guide gives a legislative roadmap to the states, many of which are poised this year to make great strides for life because of the recent elections. Often called the “Pro-life Bible,” the complete guide will be available later this year.

AUL TO CONGRESS: SHOW US THAT "LIFE COUNTS" BY DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD
This Saturday, AUL marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade with the launch of a nationwide petition calling on the newly elected Congress to show that “Life Counts” by defunding Planned Parenthood.
“Common ground on the abortion issue is possible when we begin with the fact that no tax money should go to abortion, a principle violated by the Democratic leadership in the health care reform law,” said Yoest. “The new pro-life leadership in the House will find that defunding Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, is essential to protecting life.”

A GOOD START: HOUSE VOTES TO REPEAL ABORTION-FUNDING HEALTH CARE LAW
Yoest applauded the first strike at the abortion-funding health care law as the Congress voted 245 to 189 to repeal President Obama’s legislation.
“This law, in effect, creates an abortion tax,” she observed. “With the Obama Administration arguing in court that they have the right to force this upon Americans because they may tax us, it is time for Americans to join together and send a message to the U.S. Senate. We say no to this abortion tax and the health care law that violates the principles of the pro-life Hyde Amendment. The vast majority of Americans agree that no tax for abortions is acceptable.”
