The time is now to rethink our election process

WASHINGTON, D.C., NOVEMBER 9, 2011 - Today, Americans Elect released a video that marks the one-year countdown to the 2012 presidential election.

A lot can happen in one year, and at Americans Elect the change we need has already begun. Americans Elect is on the ground across the nation gaining 50-state ballot access. We have technology in place that allows every voter to participate in the first online nominating convention in June 2012. That open process will nominate a nonpartisan ticket offering all Americans a third way, a new way to choose their president.
"Our people expect their President and the Congress to find essential agreement on issues of great moment," President Dwight Eisenhower said in his Farewell Address in 1961. Today, agreements are not being reached, and great moments are few and far between. “It is imperative that we reach across the aisle, and transcend the partisanship,” Elliot Ackerman, COO of Americans Elect said. “Let’s bring our country back into balance so more great moments can happen.”
The organization has already collected over 1.9 million signatures to support its ballot access activities, more than half of what is necessary to ensure that a third option will be on the ballot in all 50 states. This effort is real, and it is happening now, working to give voters the opportunity to pick a president, not a party.
As the video concludes, “A lot can change in a year...even in Washington.”
Over 1,400 photos were used to make the video. The photos were contributed by Americans Elect supporters who have been running a time-lapse camera in Arlington, Virginia for the past three years. The photos capture iconic Washington, including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and United States Capitol. As these symbols of our democracy flash across the screen, voiceovers of several past presidents remind us of the principles we as a nation once valued.
The video is part of Americans Elect’s outreach to voters to encourage them to go to where they can join more than 140,000 delegates who have already signed up for next year’s history-making online presidential nominating convention.
