CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien today released the following statement on the tragic passing of former University of New Hampshire President Evelyn Handler. Handler was the first woman president of the university.
Speaker William O’Brien
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of former University of New Hampshire President Evelyn Handler. Her family, the UNH community, and our state have suffered a significant loss with her passing. As the first woman in the country to be named president of a publicly supported land grant university, she was a catalyst and inspiration for female leaders in academia and throughout New Hampshire.
"President Handler had numerous accomplishments as head of UNH. One example is that through her personal efforts, UNH secured $15 million in federal grants for a science and engineering research center. This center forms a small part of her considerable legacy, but continues to have an important and positive impact on our state. We are fortunate to have had President Handler at UNH and will forever benefit from her public service.”
