AULA calls on Congress to freeze Planned Parenthood's funding

“How many girls have to suffer and die before we investigate the abortion industry?” asked AULA President Dr. Charmaine Yoest

WASHINGTON, D.C. (02-03-11) -- Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO of Americans United for Life Action (AULA) called on Congress to freeze the millions of dollars going to Planned Parenthood and to open an investigation into allegations of illegal activities by clinics affiliated with the nation’s largest abortion provider.

“It is time to hold Planned Parenthood accountable for their seedy business practices,” said Dr. Yoest. “For too long, they’ve lived off the American taxpayer with little or no oversight. In the last week alone, we’ve seen proof in Philadelphia that women’s lives were at risk while officials turned a blind eye to what goes on at an abortion clinic. Then we saw video of a Planned Parenthood clinic manager in New Jersey talking about how to manipulate the law to cover up the abuse of underage girls captive in the sex trade.  Today we see video from Virginia of possible misconduct in a Richmond Planned Parenthood clinic.

“How many girls have to suffer and die before we investigate the abortion industry? At some point, substandard care for women becomes criminal.”

Dr. Yoest continued: “The just-released video footage of a Planned Parenthood clinic manager in New Jersey blatantly ignoring federal and state law provides yet more evidence of Planned Parenthood’s contempt for the law, as well as women’s health and safety.

“The burden of proof is on Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, to show that every Planned Parenthood affiliate complies with medically—and legally—appropriate standards of care and maintains adequate oversight of the federal and state funding it receives.  Congress should hold a hearing to ask Ms. Richards these questions.  It should also subpoena relevant Planned Parenthood records to determine whether Planned Parenthood affiliates have a pattern and practice of violating federal law.

“The Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey encompasses six regional clinics including the Perth Amboy Clinic featured in the recent video. In 2009, Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey received $2.1 million of its $4.7 million annual budget from government family planning grants. Congress should investigate whether there has been a conspiracy among these federally-funded clinics to evade laws against sex trafficking as well as other violations of federal law.

“Americans recently demanded that Congress investigate another organization that failed to maintain appropriate oversight of its affiliates. Just as Congress froze funding to ACORN during Congressional investigation of its misuse and embezzlement of federal funds, AULA asks that Congress freeze all federal funding of Planned Parenthood while Congress conducts investigations of Planned Parenthood operating procedures, standards, and operating protocols.”

AUL Action is the legislative action arm of Americans United for Life, a nonprofit, public-interest law and policy organization whose vision since 1971 is a nation in which everyone is welcomed in life and protected in law. AULA played an important role during the Health Care Reform debates because of its opposition to taxpayer funded abortion, which included pivotal advertising campaigns in 14 congressional districts and extensive work on Capitol Hill. AULA's efforts during the last two Supreme Court confirmation events led to Dr. Yoest being asked to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee twice. AUL's legal team has been involved in every abortion-related case before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the successful defense of the Hyde Amendment. AUL also publishes Defending Life, the most comprehensive state-by-state legal guide of its kind, which is distributed annually to legislators across the nation.
