Concord, NH - Last week, New Hampshire Republican State Representative Marty Harty made several offensive comments about New Hampshire's mentally disabled. Rep. Harty's suggested that "defective people" should be sent to Siberia to "freeze to death." Republican House Speaker Bill O'Brien has failed to denounce Hart's comments.
Over the weekend, the Foster's Daily Democrat and Concord Monitor editorial boards called on House Republican Leadership to ask Rep. Harty to resign.
"In just two months as a state legislator, Harty has proved himself unfit for public office. The voters - not only in Strafford County but across the state - deserve better.
"Harty made headlines here and across the country last week for essentially advocating doing away with the most vulnerable of his constituents: residents with a variety of disabilities he refers to as "defective people" whom the world would be better off without."
Foster's Daily Democrat: Time for Rep. Harty to Resign
"Harty has offered insight into who he is and what he believes as he makes decisions that will deeply affect Granite Staters.
"For this newspaper, that is an unnerving prospect. It is made even more troubling because Hearty has refused to apologize for his offensive and ill-informed remarks.
"Given that obstinance, Foster's Daily Democrat believes the N.H. House leadership should call for Harty's resignation and that the freshman representative should promptly do so."
