McCotter Statement on Preservation of Grameen Bank Independence

Washington, D.C. - In light of the Bangladeshi government’s campaign to remove Muhammad Yunus as managing director of Grameen Bank, U.S. Representative Thaddeus G. McCotter (MI) has issued the following statement:

“I concur with the concerns expressed by colleagues regarding the Bangladeshi government’s efforts to remove Noble Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus from his position as managing director of Grameen Bank.  Professor Yunus is a world leader in reducing poverty and increasing entrepreneurial opportunities – especially for women – through microloans.  Thus, the continued attempt by the Bangladeshi government to usurp his guidance of the Grameen Bank would severely and adversely affect the continued success of his microloans program and the cordial relations between Bangladesh and the United States.”
